Alabama hired former Southern California coach Lane Kiffin on Friday as its offensive co-ordinator and quarterbacks coach. Kiffin returns to the Southeastern Conference after head coaching stints with the NFLs Oakland Raiders, Alabama rival Tennessee and the Trojans. He replaces Doug Nussmeier, who left Alabama for Michigan. "He is an outstanding and creative offensive coach who has great experience both at the college and NFL level," coach Nick Saban said in a statement. "He has a very good understanding of the game and I have always been impressed with what I saw in the games he called. He coaches with a great deal of passion and enthusiasm, and also does an excellent job as a teacher." Kiffin spent a week in Tuscaloosa, Ala., last month exchanging ideas with Saban and his staff and observing Alabamas offence. Now, hes the splashiest hire of Sabans tenure at Alabama, which has won three national titles in the past five seasons. The 38-year-old Kiffin was 28-15 in three-plus seasons with USC. He was fired five games into last season from one of college footballs marquee jobs. Kiffin spent six seasons (2001-06) at USC under Pete Carroll as an assistant, including the final two as offensive co-ordinator. He also called plays during his time as a head coach. He spent the 2009 season at Tennessee, going 7-6 before leaving to replace Carroll. "We want to thank the University of Alabama and Coach Saban for this tremendous opportunity, and we feel humbled and honoured to be a part of the Crimson Tide family," Kiffin said in a statement. "Ive always had the utmost respect for what Coach Saban has done with his programs. Having the unique opportunity to be here last month, I was able to meet some of the great players and the great people in the organization, and Im very excited to start working with them. "Weve seen the passion and support of the Alabama fans firsthand, and when thats combined with the storied history and tradition of the program, this is a very special place to coach." Now, Kiffin is tasked with finding a replacement for quarterback AJ McCarron, the Heisman Trophy runner-up. One potential contender, Alec Morris, posted on his Twitter page "Love it" after the hiring. His hiring creates a high-profile pairing with Saban, who along with defensive co-ordinator Kirby Smart has routinely fielded one of the nations best defences while also putting up solid numbers with a pro-style offence. Kiffin was part of two national championships as a USC assistant under Carroll. He ran the offence from 2005-06 and was passing game co-ordinator the previous year, when quarterback Matt Leinart won the Heisman. The Trojans averaged 49.1 points and 579.8 total yards per game when Kiffin was offensive co-ordinator. The Tides lone meeting with Kiffins Volunteers proved pivotal during the 2009 national championship season. Terrence Cody blocked two field goals in the fourth quarter to preserve a 12-10 Alabama win and the Tides title hopes. Kiffin did run afoul of SEC Commissioner Mike Slive during his stay at Tennessee. After Kiffin was publicly dismissive of his second reprimand from the league, this one for criticizing officials, Slive issued a letter warning him that further such comments from he or his staff would lead to a suspension from at least one game. Kiffin had questioned why officials didnt penalize Cody for unsportsmanlike conduct when the defensive lineman removed and threw his helmet after his second block on the games final play. He also said at the time that he decided to let the clock run down instead of trying to run another play before the kick because he was concerned about the officiating. No terms of the deal with Alabama were released, pending formal approval by the universitys board of trustees. Junior Seau Jersey . Not Peyton Manning. Hes holding on to the heartache to stoke his competitive fire. Jeremiah Attaochu Jersey . -- Chicago manager Darold Butler has a message for the Windy City. http://www.chargersprofansshop.com/Black-Max-Tuerk-Chargers-Jersey.html?cat=879. In sunny and almost windless conditions, the Swede shot four consecutive birdies on the front nine on his way to a 68 and went 9 under for a one-shot lead over Englands Lee Slattery and two over Paraguays Farbrizio Zanotti (6Cool. Kellen Winslow Jersey . While the pair of Spain internationals return, midfielder Xavi Hernandez will not be included in the squad after failing to recover from a muscle strain to his left leg. Kenny Wiggins Jersey . The Marlies centre set up three goals, including the game-winner, as Toronto cruised to a 4-1 victory over the Oklahoma City Barons in American Hockey League action. The Tampa Bay Lightning took advantage of the Vancouver Canucks desire to shed a veteran defenceman. Numbers Game looks at the deal sending Jason Garrison back to the state of Florida. The Lighting Get: D Jason Garrison and LW Jeff Costello. Garrison, 29, is a defenceman with good size and a cannon of a shot from the point who tied a career-high with 33 points last seasn and will be able to handle top-four minutes on the Tampa Bay defence. Garrison has played more than 20 minutes per game in each of the past four seasons and, over the course of those four years, no defenceman has fired shots at a higher rate on the power play. Over the past three seasons, he ranks 15th among defencemen with 2.16 shots on goal per game and has missed a total of seven games, so hes been durable. Last season wasnt Garrisons best, in terms of possession stats, but hes had positive possession numbers in the past, so last year shouldnt preclude him from being a useful part of the Tampa Bay defence. In Tampa Bay, the Lightning really needed an upgrade on defence. Victor Hedman and Matt Carle were the only defencemen on the roster that averaged more than 20 minutes per game last season and Garrison will add stability, as well as a power play point threat, to that group. Garrison had to waive his no-trade clause for the deal to go through, and he has four years, at a cap hit of $4.6-million, remaining on his contract. Its also not a bad deal for Tampa Bay since the contracdt was front-loaded, so the last four years come at a total cost of $15.6-million (an aveerage of $3.dddddddddddd9-million per season). Costello is a 23-year-old winger who finished a four-year career at Notre Dame, scoring 82 points in 145 games. He was acquired from Ottawa at the trade deadline, but hes not signed and may be set to become a pro free agent after August 15. The Lightning dont currently have much room on their reserve list, and the Canucks could also use the extra room in their attempts to acquire more players. The Canucks Get: A second-round pick. The 50th overall pick presents about a one-in-three chance of netting an NHL player. While its useful to get an asset, the move is more about clearing room on the Vancouver blueline. Chris Tanev joins Dan Hamhuis, Kevin Bieksa and Alexander Edler in the top four on defence, and newly-acquired Luca Sbisa can pair with Ryan Stanton on the third pair, so there was room for the Canucks to move out an established NHL defenceman and, just as importantly move out the accompanying salary. Its been a busy day, just leading up to the draft, for the Canucks, so there could very well be more to come but, whats been done establishes that Vancouver will be younger than they were last season, with financial flexibility to make moves this summer if they so choose. With a new regime, it would come as no surprise if the Canucks continue to be active in their attempt to re-build the roster.
